The River Park List
(Scroll to read entire document, or use navigation buttons at left.)
What it Is:
· The River Park List is an unmoderated email list that is available for use by all residents of Sacramento's River Park neighborhood. The List is a versatile communication tool which can be used to share opinions and information concerning River Park, regional affairs, and a myriad of other topics (see Possible Uses of the River Park List). Messages posted to the List are automatically distributed to all List participants via email.
· It is not necessary to create a web profile or share any personal information with outside parties in order to join the River Park List. All that is required is a name, email address, and street address, provided only to the List administrator (see Subscribing to the List).
· The River Park List is informal in nature and has absolutely no association with the River Park Neighborhood Association (RPNA) or any other group or organization. For web information regarding River Park and the RPNA, including activities, membership, and contacts, please visit www.riverparksacramento.net.
· Larry Bogovich is the current administrator of the River Park List and receives all emails addressed to admin@riverparklist.com. The List administrator does not moderate postings to the List.
· The overall effectiveness of the List rapidly increases with the number of members. If you choose to subscribe, please encourage your friends and neighbors to subscribe as well.
Participation Requirements:
· Participation in the River Park List is open to all residential owners and renters living in River Park. If the List members foresee a possible benefit of extending List participation to business owners, let's talk about it, on the List.
· Membership in the River Park Neighborhood Association (RPNA) is not a requirement for participation in the List.
· By subscribing to the List, you are agreeing to not post any messages or responses which are slanderous or libelous in nature, which promote or encourage illegal activity, or which are legally actionable for any other reason. You are also agreeing to follow all other Guidelines for Participation, at least to the maximum extent possible.
· If you would like to participate in the River Park List, please send an email message to admin@riverparklist.com, with "Subscribe" in the "Subject" line (or click the link, below). Please provide your name, email address, and River Park street address. If for some reason you would prefer to not furnish your street address, please indicate your block ("Sycamore between Walnut and Elm" or "Cypress Court", e.g.) along with some other piece of information that might tend to confirm your residency in River Park.
· Please note that the subscriber list will remain completely confidential and will not be made available to List members or any other entity. Anonymous lurkers (i.e. List members who monitor but never post) are welcome.
Unsubscribing, Resubscribing, and Changing Email Address:
· If you wish to unsubscribe, resubscribe, or change the email address to which List messages are forwarded, send an email to admin@riverparklist.com, with the "Subject" line tagged accordingly (or click one of the links, below).
· If you are going on vacation and don't want List messages to pile up, or if you just need a break, feel free to unsubscribe, and then resubscribe whenever you are ready to return.
That's the basics. Additional information follows...
Possible Uses of the River Park List:
· Requests for rides, merchandise pick-up or drop-off, etc.
· Community announcements (garage sales, block parties, etc.).
· Political bashing and venting.
· Comments on local, national, or world events.
· Notification of lost and found items, pets, etc.
· Requests for various recommendations (home repair, child care, landscape maintenance, and other services).
· Posting of items for sale or give away.
· Expressions of kudos and thanks.
· Notification and/or discussion of crimes, vandalism, and other Neighborhood Watch issues.
· Restaurant reviews.
· Just about anything else that is not slanderous, libelous, or that is illegal in nature.
Discouraged Uses of the List:
· Please refrain from advertising professional services. Instead, consider placing an advertisement in the River Park Review. Or, if you really feel the need, ask a friend to post a message, looking for a recommendation ("Anyone know of a good house painter?") and ask another friend to post a reply to the List ("Joe Smith does an excellent job, very neat, and affordable. I highly recommend him – 555-1234.").
· If List members would like to discourage other uses that become prevalent, let's talk about it, on the List.
Posting a Message:
· To post a message to the List, send an email to rplist@lists.riverparklist.com, from the email account you provided when you subscribed (postings from any other account will bounce and will not be distributed to List members). All subject lines will be automatically prepended with "[rplist]" (without the quotes) to assist members with inbox organization (please refer to the help files of the various email programs for more information). Remember, this List is not moderated – once a message is sent, it's gone, especially for those of you with broadband connection; there is no retracting it.
· Please do not post anonymous messages or replies; the sender's name must be readily distinguishable in the "From" line (email account setup), or included as a "signature" at the end of the message.
Replying to a Message:
· If you want to reply only to the person who posted a message, hit "Reply"; the "To" line should only include the sender's name and/or email address. This is a wise choice when the sender has requested private responses, or when an exchange has escalated to a personal diatribe that is best kept off the List.
· If you would like to reply to the entire List, hit "Reply to All"; you will note that the "To" line will contain both the sender's name and/or email address AND the address of the List (rplist@lists.riverparklist.com). Delete the sender's name / email address, leaving only the List address, otherwise the sender will receive duplicate copies of your response. Please note that the List address may have several variations depending on how it is referenced in the address books of the various users.
· Your email program is probably set up to include a copy of the entire original post in the body of your response. In most cases, especially if you are responding to a long message, there is no need to include the entire text of the original message. Use the editing features of your email program to delete unnecessary portions of the original message, leaving only enough of the original post to show the context of your response.
· Once again, and this cannot be stressed enough, slander and libel are unacceptable, as is the promotion or encouragement of illegal activities. List participants who post messages or replies of this nature will be permanently "unsubscribed" from the List.
· In that this email list is unmoderated, please use your best judgment when posting or replying to messages.
· Postings are not limited to River Park topics. If the message is not relevant to River Park, however, please include "[non-RP]" (without the quotes) at the end of the subject line, as a convenience to other List members.
· Avoid direct personal insults. Attack the ideas expressed, not the person expressing the ideas. If you want to have a personal fight, sling mud, and/or call names, please keep it off List.
· In keeping with basic netiquette, do not copy or forward to the List any private email you receive from a person, without first getting the sender's permission. If a person sends you a private reply to a List post, please do not, perhaps inadvertently, include this private response in any subsequent or follow-up postings to the List.
· Please do not post chain letters to the List, no matter how charming or charitable. "Send this to ten friends today" quickly turns into millions of email messages, clogging the internet.
· If it sounds like an urban legend, it probably is. Please check www.snopes.com prior to posting anything that you are even remotely suspicious of.
· Remember where the "Delete" key is, and use it, as necessary. There is absolutely no benefit to reading a message or following a thread that causes tension and drives up the blood pressure.
Suggestions and Comments?
· This List essentially belongs to the residents of River Park. Please send any suggestions or comments for the improvement of this communication tool to admin@riverparklist.com (or click the link, below), or, better yet, let's talk about it on the List!
